In our family we love pancakes. A few years ago a friend gave me the recipe for buttermilk pancakes and for a time we would have them every week for our leisurely, family Saturday breakfast. This was when our dining room was a part of the kitchen and the cooking of them therefore was just a part of the occasion as eating them. They were a bit more filling than the regular recipe and even though made with half wholemeal flour, were still light. Eventually our boys learned to make them too and today they are one of their favourite things to make. Our younger sons will often return home hungry from school and make a batch to see them through until supper time. When our second son wanted to cook something to surprise his new wife on her birthday, I dictated how to make savoury pancake layers down the phone, knowing that he could already make the basic pancakes, so was well on his way to a special meal.
Despite all this, I don’t remember tossing our pancakes, not even for Saturday breakfast. I’m sure we’ve had a go at some time, but making them one by one was enough to occupy us. I guess no-one wanted the risk of not only a greasy stove but also one with dough stuck to it and the ceiling above! Although I wouldn’t be surprised if our married son tossed them for his boys. He’s one for a laugh and loves a bit of action. But then he doesn’t normally have to clean the stove!…
