How many family decisions have been made around the table with a big pot of tea providing the necessary comfort and strength at important times? Or how often have you offered a cup of tea to a friend or family member in need of comfort and consolation in a difficult time? Somehow it has become the tool for providing this and more to guests or family, whoever they are. Even the postman or milkman has been known to be provided with a good cuppa whilst doing his rounds!
The cup of tea has become a tradition in England since the Dutch introduced it in the 17th century. Some traditions are wonderful ways of providing a sense of belonging and in a family this is important. In our family, we often enjoy Sunday tea in the evening (instead of our usual hot meal) when we eat egg or tuna sandwiches, freshly baked English Scones and homemade cakes with a good old pot of English black tea. It brings the family together and makes our “being together” feel special.
Long may hot tea continue to serve us with refreshment day by day!
